The Order of the Hidden Masters

The Order of the Hidden Masters (O.H.M.), also known as the Hidden Masters, is an occult and mystical order based in England. Limited scholarly analysis suggests that it was founded by Jean Michaud in 1939. It is said to have hosted its early meetings in the basement of the Atlantis Bookshop, a renowned esoteric bookstore in London.

Known members of this secret order include Jean Michaud (once a member of AMORC), Michael Juste, Gerald Gardner, the founder of Wicca and Aleister Crowley, the founder of Thelema.

Structure of the O.H.M.

The O.H.M. consists of three groups. The first group is the Outer Circle and comprises of those students (titled Mystai or Initiates) studying the first three grades, with one grade per year.

The second group, which like in most occult fraternities is hard to get into, consists of advanced students (titled Epoptai or Seers) who study the Inner Mysteries. The names of the members (Mystai and Epoptai) are based upon titles given to initiates of the Eleusinian mysteries in ancient Greece.

The third group consists of the adepts and Masters of the order. They operate it’s Supreme Council.

Known Teachings of the O.H.M

The order teaches occult science, also known as gupta vidya (divine knowledge) through postal correspondence in a course spanning many years. Drawing from a diverse range of esoteric systems, the Outer Order teachings of the O.H.M include studies on subjects such as; alchemy, magic, philosophy, ethics, metaphysics, cosmology, epistemology, evolution, the occult constitution of man, psychic abilities and elementals.

The O.H.M’s inner order teachings include; the alchemical marriage, mind reading, clairvoyance, raja yoga, spiritual regeneration, communion with spiritual adepts and the attainment of cosmic consciousness (a Rosicrucian term for the experience of enlightenment).

As with many esoteric organizations, the O.H.M. maintains a veil of secrecy and confidentiality. Details about its practices and teachings are closely guarded and reserved for its members and initiates. This air of secrecy not only adds to the allure of the group but also aligns with the tradition of mystery schools and occult societies throughout history, which have often used symbolism and hidden knowledge as a means of transmitting esoteric wisdom.

Jean Michaud (1884-1961)

The alleged founder of the O.H.M, Jean Michaud (1884-1961), remains a mysterious figure. Little is known about his background and life. What is known is that he was born in 1951, was a musician and author and that he contributed to the Occult Observer (1949-51) magazine which published articles from prominent occultists of the time. This magazine was edited by Michael Juste who often wrote under the pseudonym of Michael Houghton.

The Concept of Hidden Masters

The idea of “hidden masters” is not an original concept. Throughout history, spiritual seekers and occultists have claimed to receive guidance and teachings from hidden adepts or masters who remain hidden from the public eye. Most famously, H.P Blavatsky did this to give credit to her Theosophical Society. However, other groups such as the (Hermetic) Golden Dawn, BOTA (Builders of the Adytum), the Society of Inner Light and the Servants of Light have all followed suit, claiming in modern parlance to be ‘contacted’ (mystery) schools.

Secrecy of the O.H.M

It is important to note that the realm of occultism and esotericism is vast and diverse, encompassing a wide range of beliefs, practices, and organizations. As with any field that delves into hidden or hidden knowledge, discernment and critical thinking are essential when exploring these subjects. While the O.H.M. and its alleged activities have been a topic of interest and intrigue among occult enthusiasts, information about the group remains scarce and often shrouded in mystery.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Order of the Hidden Masters represents an enigmatic and mysterious organization within the esoteric and occult community. Allegedly founded in 1939 by Jean Michaud, the group is dedicated to the study of occult teachings and the pursuit of hidden truths which it’s own leaders would purport date back to Atlantis. Its members engage in spiritual practices, seeking spiritual regeneration and liberation from the cycle of reincarnation. As with many esoteric organizations, the O.H.M. maintains secrecy and confidentiality surrounding its practices and teachings. While the historical existence and activities of the Order of the Hidden Masters continue to be a subject of speculation, the allure and fascination surrounding the organization persists.
