Hekate at the Crossroad

The goddess of crossroads, thresholds, and the third option nobody mentions. A patient introduction to the figure most practitioners eventually meet.
Hekate is the goddess practitioners do not look for. She is the one who looks for them. She arrives when a decision has narrowed to two options and neither of them is right. She is patient about it. She does not push. She stands at the place where the road forks and waits to see whether the traveler will look up and notice that there is, in fact, a third road — the one nobody marked because nobody was supposed to take it.
Most of the working practitioners we know who have a steady relationship with Hekate did not seek it. The relationship found them at a moment when neither of the obvious options was honest. Marry, or do not marry. Take the job, or do not take the job. Stay in the city, or move. Hekate was the answer that turned out to be: neither of those. Something you have not yet allowed yourself to think.
What she carries
Two torches. One illuminates the road behind. One illuminates the road ahead. Most depictions also place hounds at her side; the hounds are listening for things the practitioner cannot hear yet. In some traditions she carries keys. The keys open thresholds. The thresholds are between worlds, but they are also between selves — between the version of you who is now and the version who is about to become.
She is sometimes shown with three faces. The three faces look in three directions: where you have been, where you are, and where you have not yet allowed yourself to look. This is not aspirational symbolism. This is what attention does when it stops being binary.
How to work with her, briefly
If you have arrived at a forked road and neither option feels true, this is the small practice the working practitioners suggest. It is older than the internet and gentler than most things.
Light a candle. Any candle. Place it where the light makes a small circle in an otherwise dim room.
Speak the question aloud, in plain words. Not the spiritual phrasing of the question — the actual question. I do not know whether to leave this job. I do not know whether to call my brother. I do not know whether to keep practicing this thing.
Then say: Hekate, if there is a road I am not seeing, show it to me. That is it. That is the whole request.
Sit. Do not journal. Do not try to figure it out. The answer, if she chooses to send one, does not usually arrive in the room. It usually arrives in the following three days, in the form of a small specific event — an unexpected conversation, a sentence overheard, a feeling at sunset — that makes a third option visible. The visibility is the answer.
What to do with the third option
You do not have to take it. Hekate does not require obedience. She is the goddess of noticing, not the goddess of doing. Many practitioners receive the third option and choose, after some thought, one of the original two anyway. That is fine. The point was not to take the third road. The point was to know that there was one — and to make the original choice from a place of seeing rather than from a place of binary urgency.
This, in our reading, is most of what spiritual practice is for. Not to give you new options. To give you the kind of attention that can see the options that were already there.
